Outdoor Activities
Chelmorton is right in the middle of the Peak District National Park and there are countless opportunities for exploring the countryside on foot, bike or horseback using miles of footpaths, bridleways and quiet lanes.

We have a selection of leaflets, brochures and maps at Swallow Barn to help
you plan your walks in the Peak District., including several circular ones
which are 'straight from the door' and linear ones which you
can do one way and return by bus. We are also happy to recommend routes to
suit your walking ability (and the weather conditions!).
However if you enjoy planning your walks before you arrive on holiday, here are some suggestions:
- Interpretive trails and audio trails to help you enjoy the best
of the Peak District can be downloaded free. (The one called 'White
Peak Wild Walk' starts about 4m from Chelmorton and there is a bus
from the village to the start/end point at White Lodge, so you can leave
the car behind if you wish).
www.visitpeakdistrict.com/walking - Walking routes to download, mostly for £1.50 each. They include
an Ordnance Survey map with the route marked on, plus a description and photo
trail for the walk. Walks which pass though Chelmorton include walks: no.
1397 (8m); no. 1655 (8.5m); no. 1981 (11m); no. 1982 (9m); and no. 3437 (6.25m).
www.walkingworld.com - Free walking routes to download, including an Ordnance Survey map.
(The two walks called 'Puddings & Palaces' start from Bakewell,
which can be reached by bus from Chelmorton, so you can leave the car behind
if you wish).
www.visitpeakdistrict.com/walking - Peak District Walking Festival
A walking festival is held every year in the Spring, with over a hundred guided walks available, many of them free. Walks are led by local experts and range from high level moorland walks to easy town heritage trails. Contact Bakewell Information Centre on 01629 816558

Secure bicycle storage is available for your bikes at Swallow Barn. However
if you prefer to hire your bikes there is a superb cycle hire centre just
4 miles away at Parsley Hay on the Tissington Trail – a former railway
line that offers miles of safe, traffic-free cycling.
For mountain bikers the choice of routes is endless - with rough moorland
tracks, routes through woods and fields and a labyrinth of quiet lanes.

If you wish to bring your own horses we can arrange stabling and grazing
at a nearby farm. The Pennine Bridleway passes by Chelmorton, offering a
superb waymarked route for mountain bikers, horse riders and walkers. Do
a stretch of it and then loop back round, using Swallow Barn as your base
for a number of days out on the trail.
